OKEHAMPTON Argyle first team brought the curtain down on the most successful season in their Carlsberg South West Peninsula history with an informal 'presentation night' at the clubhouse in Simmons Park.
The event was hosted by first team manager Kevin Taylor, who was keen to point out that overall the season had been a good one with the team equalling their highest ever SWPL finish, with their highest ever number of points — and in doing so achieved the greatest number of wins and most goals scored in a single season.
The obvious high being the 1-0 win away to neighbours Tavistock AFC and the fact that Argyle took four points off the eventual champions; this feat was closely followed by their 2-1 win against a good Exeter University side over the Easter Bank Holiday.
Taylor also reflected on the team's poor disciplinary record which has been disappointing and will need to be addressed next term.
Results, by and large were inconsistent, mainly due to the availability of players, However, the emergence of good young lads in the squad such as Aaron Dearing Tallan Burns, Ross Voaden and Oli Crimmins has been immensely pleasing and should give the club a good base for many years to come, albeit with some of them off to university in the not too distant future
Taylor firmly believes that with the addition of one or two new faces and a better start, if they can get the best players available on a more consistent basis, there is no reason why Argyle should not be challenging for honours next season.
In terms of the awards, Aaron Dearing was voted the 'most improved player' with Jason Cordice picking up the award for 'leading goalscorer' with an impressive 22 goals in 23 games.
Taylor's vote for 'manager's player of the year' went to Corey Burns, who, in addition to playing every match, was the only player not to miss a single training session throughout the season.
The main award of 'player's player of the year' also went to young goal keeper Aaron Dearing, who started with the second team but eventually made the number one jersey his own with an impressive run of performances in the second half of the season.
On a sadder note, long standing club secretary Charlie Bond has decided to stand down due to family commitments. While it has yet to be confirmed at the next annual meeting his replacement will be Michele Taylor. The club thank Charlie for the work he has done over the years and welcome Michele into her new role as the new season approaches.
The annual meeting is on June 10 at the clubhouse in Simmons Park starting at 7pm with the club keen to openly invite new members onto the committee.
Pre-season training is due to commence on Tuesday, June 30 from 7pm at Simmons Park with new players also welcome and first team manager Kevin Taylor has already been busy arranging a host of friendlies.
