TAVISTOCK'S Squash first and and second teams were both in action last week with mixed results.
Team two played Plymouth University 4 at home.
Steve Luxton got things off to a great start with a comfortable 3-0 win with man of the match Matt Smith following that up with a convincing 3-1 victory after losing the first game. Robin Burdfield found himself up against a determined opponent but after four close games lost 1-3. Joe Kuipers had a comfortable win 3-0 and Richard Baxter lost 1-3 in another close call. That still meant a win for Tavistock 3-2.
Team two played an away fixture against ADS 2 their closest competition in division two on the March 12.
Matt followed up his win for Team 2 with a comfortable victory 3-0. Will Westlake, struggling with an injury, never got going and lost 1-3. Stuart Cox also found it hard going, never really getting into the game and losing 0-3 but man of the match Andy Howell managed to bring things back to 2-2 with a 3-2 win despite going 0-2 down.
Clive Marais found himself in a real battle and lost 2-3 to give ADS2 the match. Man of the match was Andy for making a fantastic come back.
Tavistock Squash and Racketball Club held their monthly competition on March 4. This month it was a doubles event.
Congratulations go to Matt Smith and Richard Davies who won in a head to head match. It was a close match between the two teams, all coming down to the final game, which Matt and Richard just managed to sneak. Matt had not played doubles before but quickly got the hang of it. It was a great night, with lots of doubles games going on after the main competition had finished. Next month it will be a Racketball team competition on Wednesday, April 1.
