FIVE years of training and discipline have paid off for a Tavistock College student after she gained a coveted black belt first degree in Tae Kwondo.

In that time Minnie Hurdwell, aged 13, has been training in the martial art to achieve her ambition by working her way up through all the belts.

There are five tenets of the martial art Taekwondo – which are courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self-control and indomitable spirit. These disciplines have now helped Minnie earn her first degree black belt.

Minnie trains with South Coast Martial Arts and her instructors are Debbie Young and Chris Wood.

Debbie said: ‘Minnie started Taekwondo a shy and reserved little girl who has grown into a confident young woman. Her dedication to achieving her goal was outstanding, putting lots of time and effort into getting her black belt.

‘It is an awesome achievement for one of Minnie’s age and something that will keep her in good standing for the rest of her life. We are very proud of Minnie.’
