THERE were ‘max fives’ from Con C and West Devon A to set the new season’s standard in the Tavistock Snooker League.

Con C, who are not normally associated with setting the snooker world alight, stamped their authority on West Devon D in their first game of the new season. Gritty performances from Davies, Neale, Davey and new summer signing Hall secured three close frames, with Bassett adding a touch of finesse to the proceedings in his frame.

West Devon’s Decieco, Shrimpton (Junior) and Murton were on the end of the close black ball frames and can only think ‘maybe on another day’. It was a good start for the league’s dark horses, Con C.

One of last year’s top of the table pace setters, West Devon A, were also racking up a solid ‘maximum five’ in their first game against Golf B.

Brookes, Taylor and K Rich made it a comfortable three for West Devon, with Heathman and Lawrence having to pull out all the stops to overcome stubborn ‘black ball’ resistance from Golf’s Congo and Brockington.

Undoubtedly the upset of the evening was West Devon B traveling up the hill to Golf A and brazenly coming away with all the spoils. Golf took the first frame with Doidge edging out Boyd on the black ball.

The all captain’s affair was next with West Devon’s ‘leader of men’, Gilchrist, wresting victory from Pope to draw his side level.

Rich (Senior) then put West Devon in front at a canter, only for Turnbull to pull Golf back to parity again with equal dominance.

Hero of the night proved to be West Devon’s ‘summer signing’, Hooper, who started to repay his transfer fee with a solid win over Bruty. Nice start for West Devon, with Golf needing to get their ‘star men’ back on the scene.
