TEN members of Tavistock Athletic Club are busy gearing up for the run of their lives as they take on 26.2 miles around the streets of London on Sunday.

Allan Herdman, Adrian Pitcher, Claire Pitcher, Graham De Val, Sam Lake , Anita Cawley, Andy Houghton, Amanda Warnett, Carmel Nye, Beth Watmore and Andrew Alcock have all been working hard across the winter months in preparation for the London Marathon , which is one of the UK’s biggest sporting events.

In addition to training and preparing for a 26.2 mile run several runners are also working hard to raise funds for worthy causes as an extra incentive to complete the gruelling event.

The runners are aiming to raise a total of £14,000 for their chosen charities which are The Meningitis Research Foundation, The National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children, Parkinson’s’ Research, Visually Impaired Children Taking Action , Micro and Anophthalmic Children’s’ Society and the St John Ambulance.

The London marathon was first run in 1981 when 6,255 runners crossed the finish line. This year will see 38,000 runners take on the course.

Interestingly the ballot for the 2016 London marathon attracted a record number of entries – 247,069.

It is anticipated that this year’s marathon will see the one millionth runner cross the finish line – maybe this might be a member of Tavistock Athletic Club.

All of the runners have trained for their marathon with the help , guidance and support of the team of coaches from the club and expressed their thanks to them, together with their families and friends who have supported them on their marathon journey.
