Carlsberg South West Peninsula division one East
Okehampton Argyle 2
Exeter University 2
THIS was real end of season stuff at Simmons Park on Saturday with both teams putting in below par performances and producing a game with plenty of effort but little quality.
Both sides were missing several of their regular first teamers and a draw was probably a fair result but Argyle will be kicking themselves for giving away the equalising goal in the last minute of the game. The visitors played the better football early on, but Oke clawed themselves back into the game and started to put pressure on the University back four.
Argyle took the lead on 34 minutes after a quick move through midfield produced a corner wide on the left. Chris Hollands' deep cross was met at the far post by captain Dale Chadwick and his header looped over the students' keeper Nat Slack to put the home side one up. The remainder of the half was played out in midfield and neither side threatened to score again before the interval.
Only nine minutes after the break, the University were level. The Argyle defence failed to clear a corner properly and Jack Martin prodded home the equaliser. Back came Okehampton and within a further six minutes their lead was restored. Matt Sanders played a lovely ball forward to Ollie Crimmins which was partially cleared by the University defence, but only as far as John Coakley, who picked the ball up with his back to the goal, turned and blasted home from 12 yards.
Okehampton began to push forward at this stage and looked dangerous but were caught by a quick break by the students on 32 minutes.
Tom McGratton was adjudged to have tripped a University forward in the area and the referee gave a penalty. Lewis Aimson's spot kick was brilliantly saved by Argyle keeper Harry Geering to keep the home side in front.
Minutes later, a tremendous lob from the edge of the area by Argyle forward Ed Bradshaw looked like increasing the lead but visiting keeper Slack did really well to turn the ball over the bar.
With the clock ticking down, three points looked certain for Argyle, but they proved to be masters of their own downfall. As the game entered the last minute a lovely pass into the visitors' corner was chased down by full back Chris Hollands leaving only three at the back. The University won the ball back and played it long upfield. Dale Chadwick's attempted headed clearance hit the back of Tom McGratton and fell to the feet of visiting forward Jamie Baylis, who ran on and then unleashed an unstoppable shot from 30 yards to tie up the game.
This was a below par performance by Argyle although one still had to admire their tremendous work rate. Their man of the match was Harry Geering for a solid performance and a superb penalty save.
• This Saturday Argyle are home to Teignmouth in the league, home 3pm.
• This week's winner in Argyle 200 club draw for April 6 is number 72, belonging to P Carter, who wins £25.
