St Austell 4

Tavistock AFC 3

THE Lambs lost out in this seven goal thriller in the South West Peninsula League to last year's finalist. High flying St Austell are one of this year's fancied team to take the Premier League title.

The Lambs shook their hosts when they took the lead after just 45 seconds as Lewis Edwards took full advantage of a mistake by home keeper Jason Chapman to shoot into an empty net.

The Lambs continue to impress with the home defence looking nervous as the visitors pressed the ball high up the field. The pace of Fyneboy, Williams and Edwards continually threaten to penetrate the home defence.

Two efforts from Fyneboy went close, the first just cleared the cross bar, the second he screwed just wide of the target from 18 yards out.

The Lambs increased their lead in the 25th minute when Kelvin Fyneboy beat goal keeper Chapman to a defender's throw in before he rounded the keeper and slotted the ball home.

St Austell responded, and within a minute they reduced the arrears when Dan Nancarrow fired home at the near post from 15 yards.

This goal lifted the home team and they started to get a foothold in the game. Martin Piper produced a fine save to deny Body from levelling the scores. Two minutes later the Lambs almost restored their two goal advantage but Fyneboy's fierce shot screamed past the far post for a goal kick.

A great move between Dave Hallett and Jordan Williams found Harry Southcott on the overlap but his shot failed to find the target.

Then just before the interval the home team levelled the scores when Mike Body scored from close range following a fine move down the left wing.

The home team with the breeze at their backs came out and controlled the early minutes of the second half. The home team took the lead six minutes into the half, as the ball was scrambled clear by the visitors' defence but the ball fell to mid fielder Ollie Brokenshire who fired home a fierce shot from 16 yards.

The home team doubled their advantage in the 69th minute when Dan Lean met Martin Watts free kick, to head home via the inside of the post.

Back came the Lambs as they pushed forward to reduce the arrears, a great run from the half way line deep into the heart of the home defence, but his shot was just off target.

Substitute Jack Crago came on for the Lambs and his pace on the left wing had an instant impact on the home defence, who looked nervous every time he got the ball.

In the 85th minute the Lambs reduced the deficit when Fyneboy lobbed the ball over the advancing Chapman to find the net.

Two minute later Crago produced another fine run but his shot was well saved by Chapman.

In the 88th minute he again out paced the full back cut into the penalty area but his square pass into the six yard box was just inches away from finding Fyneboy.

It was the Lambs that finished the stronger launching attack after attack on the home defence, but they managed to see the game out to progress to the next round of the competition.

This was a terrific performance by the Lambs against a top side. There was little to choose between the two teams over the 90 minutes and it would have been interesting if the Lambs could have equalised to take the game into extra time.
