SPORTS clubs in West Devon are being urged to harness the excitement and enthusiasm of the London 2012 Games to encourage more people to get involved with local sport.
The Join In Weekend — to run throughout the UK in mid-August — will be an opportunity for the region's clubs and community groups to attract new members, helpers or supporters.
All clubs need to do to be part of the weekend over 18-19 August is to host some activities or events that are open to visitors. Events can range from coaching clinics, open days, or sports fun days.
There is full information on the website http://www.joininuk.org">www.joininuk.org where clubs can register and advertise their events.
A 'club kitbag' is also available through the website and it contains ideas, support and advice, including marketing materials, health and safety tips and a practical guide.
David Fursdon, chair of the South West England Board for the 2012 Games, said: 'I would encourage clubs to host an event and be part of the UK's biggest celebration of local sport.
'Join In Local Sport will be a great opportunity for our clubs to capture the enthusiasm for sport that the Games will generate. We hope that as many people as possible turn up, take part and join in at their local sports facilities, whether it be trying out a new sport, painting the clubhouse or providing some other form of expertise.'
The choice of event is entirely up to individual clubs and it is completely free. The website makes it easy to create an event and have it added to the Join In Local Sport map.
One club which is getting involved is Okehampton Ladies Hockey Club, which is organising Back to Hockey sessions.
All Join In events will benefit from a national marketing, PR and social media campaign – ensuring that as many people as possible are aware of what is going on over the weekend.
