TAVISTOCK Athletic Club runner James Best competed for the England National U20 Fell running team in Ireland last week. The Junior Home International took place at Glendalough, County Wicklow, with teams from five countries. The race over 7k with 1500ft of climb was an 'out and back' course with a fast start. James quickly moved into 14th position by the top of the climb. Another superb descent saw James finish in 10th place and fourth England finisher. The U20 men won their event and the strength in the other teams meant that the overall meeting was won by the England team. James was 'really chuffed' and had a nice dip in the lake to ease his legs after the race. James was overjoyed at earning his first England vest, after a difficult season. James is extremely thankful for the guidance of Tavistock's highly successful 'Farah group' coach Carrie Lawson who has really helped James in training and managing injury. James, now off to university, will move up into the even more competitive U23 age category but hopefully he can still show the selectors the quality of runners from the South West . Tavistock Athletic Club trains from Tavistock College on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and prospective members are welcome.
