CALSTOCK Rowing Club held the 140th anniversary Regatta this weekend. Regattas can be traced back to 1873 when the main racing was between the working boats of the Upper Tamar for large cash prizes and local prestige.
The prestige of becoming a Cornwall Rowing Association Champion remains the same for the competitors.
Although Saturday was a damp affair no one let it spoil the day and the bright sunny weather on Sunday meant the weekend ended on a high.
On Saturday the first race saw Calstock clinched their first senior mixed coxed fours championship in many years, with the crew of Ben Bradley (cox) Leigh Anne Alford, Sam North, Nick Bradley and Rosie Bradley seeing off the challenge of Polperro.
In the U14s Cornish Randan category Calstock (Rebekah Bradley, Ben Bradley and Ruby Roberts) came second to a strong Polperro crew, beating Saltash into third this result moved Calstock into second place in the championship - a superb achievement.
It was the same finish order in the U14s coxed four where Polperro completed a perfect season to become champions and the Calstock crew of Sam North (cox), Emma Maunder, Rebekah Bradley, Ben Bradley and Ruby Roberts came second in both the race and the Championships,
In the U16 age group in the pair of paddles Calstock's David Scoles came second to cement his 2nd place in the boys championship and Kate Bradley came third in the girls race to finish second in the championship.
Calstock put out four crews in the U16 CRD the 'A' Calstock crew of Tom Osborne, David Scoles and Jack Osbourne had to finish ahead of the Saltash crew to clinch the title. On Sunday the U16s girls Calstock coxed four of Ruby Roberts (cox), Martha Roberts, Kate Bradley, Molly Bytheway and Laura Scoble confirmed themselves as Cornish champions. The U16s boys coxed four of Ben Bradley(cox) Alex Bartlett, Jack Osbourne, Tom Osbourne and David Scoles came in second in their race to finish second in the championship.
In the senior racing Calstock Ladies CRD of Ley Roberts, Leigh Anne Alford and Rosie Bradley came second to confirm second place in the championship behind Polperro ladies.
The men's pair of paddles saw Sam North storm clear in the lead in boat 42, but he was slowly chased down and passed on the first leg by eventual winner James Howells,
In the men's four the Calstock crew of Ben Bradley (cox), Jake Bailey, Nick Bradley, Sam North and Jack Osbourne came home in fifth place behind the winners Polperro .
The mens CRD had Calstock and Saltash in joint first place in the championship so the final race of the season would be a winner takes all affair. Calstock crew of Sam North, Nick Bradley and Jake Bailey were just pipped by Saltash who won the race and the title.
