KELLY College swimmers Jamie Brew, Nathan Linden, Benjamin Staig and Georgia Martin attended a reception in their honour at the Civic Centre in Plymouth recently. Together with other winners of the BAGCAT age group awards, the four were presented with their prizes by the Lord Mayor of Plymouth Councillor Vivien Pengelly. The lord mayor has long been an enthusiastic supporter of sports facilities for young people in Plymouth and was instrumental in driving forward the building of the Life Centre. Rebecca Carpenter was also a prize winner for Kelly College, but unfortunately was unable to attend. Sophie Hastings won the Leaze Shield — a special award whose recipient was chosen by the chairman of the City of Plymouth ASA Diego Walker. Despite ill health disrupting her training, Sophie took the 100m freestyle championship and broke the 60-second barrier for the first time. She was recognised for her courage and determination to overcome serious health issues and is a worthy winner. The college said it was a pleasure to recognise the achievements of these young athletes who are a credit to their squad and school.
