IN the wake of the Olympic Games many sports clubs are seeing interest in their services grow. Tavistock Athletic Club has never had a problem in attracting members to its doors but after the success of Jessica Ennis, Mo Farah and other GB athletes, demand has risen tremendously.
The club currently has more than 130 junior members with a further 80 (and rising) on a waiting list. Although it is being overwhelmed it is determined to do something about it. Its current priority is to invite more members into the club while continuing to improve on the quality of what it provides now.
There are two keys to achieving this: first of all it is looking to recruit more coaches. They currently have 12 active coaches working with the juniors, mainly on a Tuesday evening. They are now actively looking to double that number and recruit new coaches from among their current senior members, parents of junior members as well as anyone from outside the club who would like to get involved.
They are also planning to expand their provision beyond the existing established sessions: over time, to be able to coach every night of the week and, perhaps, Saturday morning besides.
So this is a direct appeal to anyone out there who is currently not involved with the club. Can you help? Can you spare some time to come on to Tavistock Athletic Club's coaching team? The club will help new coaches financially towards being trained so long as they make a reasonable contribution back through coaching on a regular basis.
These are exciting times for sport in general and athletics in particular. Why not be part of this and contribute to the development of the next Jessica Ennis or Mo Farah? Who knows, it could be you sitting proudly in the stand at Rio watching your charge earning their first gold medal.

In the meantime, the club are laying on a series of open training sessions aimed at anyone currently on their waiting list or who may be interested in joining.
Starting on Friday, August 31 for three weeks, prospective members will be shown what the club is about and can have a go at the various athletic events.
A small charge of £2 will be made.
