DUE to an overdue improvement in the weather and the valiant efforts of the green staff, golfers are back to playing competitive matches at Tavistock Golf Club.

62 pairs competed in the captain’s drive and there was excellent scoring with the top 36 teams scoring 40 points and over. 

Top of the leader board with 48 points were Steve Fowler and Richard Rowe, second Nick Mier and John McGahey with 47 points on count back from Rob Jarman and Alan Doidge, fourth Jason Allen and Patrick McMahon with 46 points.

The winning mixed pair were George and Nicky Gawman with 45 points and the best ladies team Belinda McSherry and Lynn Swift with 43 points.

In the men’s Knape medal, scoring was close but Nick Turner won the day with a nett 73, second Mike Apps nett 74 and third was Nick Mier with nett 75 on countback from Graham Ruth, Paul Congo and Rob Staniland.

In the men vets Wally Hammond Trophy John Berry, first in division onme, took the trophy with 39 points, second in the division Rob Williams 37 points on count back from Peter Leverton.

First in division two Ken Cole 38pts, second David Oriss 34pts on countback from Les Tocher. 

In the ladies qualifying round of the Coronation Foursome winners were Maggie Hillman and Lyn Swift with 33 pts on count back from runners up Jenny Kay and Norma Thewlis. Maggie and Lyn will represent Tavistock in the area final.

In the monthly stableford Kayleigh Cann was first in division one with 35 pts, second Nicky Gawman 34pts and third Hilary Picton 32pts.

In division two first was Marion Stenhouse 36 points, second Gail Reed 35pts, third Helen Phipps 32 pts. 

Topping division three Anne Williams 36pts, second Jean Thomas 33pts and third Helen Heywood 30pts.

In the ping four ball better ball first with 41pts Fran Horton and Hilary Picton, second with 37pts Wendy George and Cheryl Hall on count back from Nicky Gawman and Belinda McSherry.

The 50 pairs with the best scores in England qualify  for the Grand Final and the next 50 pairs will qualify for the plate final to be held in Gainsborough.
