A CHARITY golf day has added £4,000 into the coffers for Tavistock Golf Club’s chosen charities of the year.

Throughout their year, the club’s captains raise money for their chosen charities; this year the causes are the British Heart Foundation and Pancreatic Cancer Action. The big fundraising event is the Charity four ball better ball and this year 67 pairs took part, playing on a course in superb condition and in good golfing weather.

At the end of the day £4,000 had been raised to add to the funds. Scoring was high with the top 40 pairs scoring 40 points and over but the winners of the day were the father and son team of Mike and Callum Watkin with 47 pts on countback from Mike Burbridge and Danvers Hough, third Dawn Dennis and Alan Gawman 46 pts.

In the men’s Freeman Cup Mike Beveridge took the honours with a nett 67 to top division one, second Chris Johns nett 69 and third, Paul Crump nett 70. First in division two was Lee Bartlett on nett 69, second Ajay Patel on nett 70 and in the junior Callum Watkin on nett 71 on count back from Jerry Bawden and Luis Inacio. 

Stephen Shipman won the one club and putter with 31pts; second, Luis Reid 30pts and third with 27pts Michael Ridley.  The men veterans Ken Kendall Trophy was won by Chris Morley with a nett 73; runner up Ernie Cash nett 74 on count back from Alan Pope.

In the Ladies’ Closed Meeting Sarah Hanson in division one scored a nett 69 to win the Chris Leach Trophy; second was Fran Horton, nett 73, on count back from Marion Stenhouse. 

With a nett 72 Helen Phipps was first in division two; second, Ginny Samborne on nett 77 on count back from Val Jarman.  Belinda  MacSherry won the Molly Muirhead Salver for the best scratch score in division one and Gail Reed the Salver for the best scratch score in division two.
