IT was perfect golfing weather for Tavistock Golf Club’s Mixed Team Open when 26 teams played in this popular  event. 

Scoring was high but the Tavistock team of Alan Gawman, Lynn Swift,  George and Nicky Gawman took the honours with 87 points on countback from the Exeter team Anne Norman, Julie Norman, Paul Jordan and Patrick Williams. 

Close behind with 86pts were Graham and Fran Horton (Tavistock), Penny and Barry Howson (Staddon Heights).  Ladies nearest the pin on the seventh, Sue Eastwood;  men’s nearest the pin on the fourth: Trevor Smith (Sparkwell).

The annual match between the men veterans and ladies’ vets for the Thewlis Trophy resulted in a narrow win for the men by four and a half to three and a half.

‘We are getting closer’, said captain Shirley Trevena, ‘but it was a great match, competitive but enjoyable!’

In the Greenkeepers’ Trophy Mark Russell was first with 42pts, second Dave Treble on 40pts and third Paul Drake on 38pts.

The ladies’ monthly Stableford was played in conjunction with the Allen Candlesticks.    In division one first was Dawn Dennis on 38pts, second Hilary Picton on 36pts on countback from Maggie Hillman, Sara Woock, Bev Ruth and Lynn Swift.  June Kendall was first in division two with 40pts; second was Val Jarman on 37pts on countback from Jenny Kay.  In division three first was Janet Kiely on 37pts; second was Sue Eastwood on 31pts and third with 30pts Anne Williams. 

Winners of the Allen Candlesticks were the pair June Kendall and Sarah Woock with the joint score of 76pts.
