WEATHER conditions were again favourable for this year’s Veterans Championships at Yelverton Golf Club. A total of 48 entrants took part in this medal format competition with the winners being the best scratch and handicap scores. Paul Harvey pipped Chris Willis in a close hard fought contest. Some big putts and great ‘up and downs’ helped Paul secure the Captains Day Rose Bowl scratch trophy and the title of veterans’ champion golfer of the year.

With a superb nett score of 64, John Friend secured the veteans’ handicap champion golfer title with three shots to spare. Scratch: 1, Paul Harvey, 80; 2, Chris Willis, 80; 3, Pete Davis, 81. Handicap: 1, John Friend, 64; 2, Andy Young, 67; 3, Chelsea Davis, 67.

The Lady Captain’s day was full of fun, sun and surprises. Organised by ladies captain Mair Preston-Jones the event included a putting competition, 18-holes of golfing fun, on course light refreshments mid round and an evening meal. On the first hole was Adam Frayne, head professional, who got the ladies off to an excellent start by playing their tee shots for them all in aid of the captains charity – Guide Dogs for the Blind. Each hole held its own surprise which all added up to an extremely enjoyable day and a valiant effort by the captain.

This week saw two ladies inter club matches played at Yelverton Golf Club. The first was in the President’s Trophy division three where Yelverton confirmed their third place finish by beating Ilfracombe 5-2. Yelverton were also playing host in the Sheelah Creasy Bowl division five match against High Bullen where the result was also 5-2 to the home side and another third place finish.

In the men’s there was a Plymouth Area League top of the table clash with Staddon Heights playing host to Yelverton Golf Club. Match after match went Staddon’s way with home advantage and firm greens being mastered. The Yelverton pair of Kev Blaber and Dave Hyslop secured half a point for the visitors, with the team losing overall by ½-5½.
