THE facelift to the Dartmoor leats continued this week at Yelverton Golf Club and yielded a touch of nostalgia as view of three or four decades ago were unveiled.
More than a dozen hard working Dartmoor Preservation Association ‘Friends of Dartmoor’ group in conjunction with Yelverton Golf Club volunteers persevered to restore the condition of the Devonport leat around the 11th tee area.
Apart from numerous lost golf balls found also discovered was a ‘driver’, a club often used to propel the ball hundreds of yards down the centre of the fairway and also a golf shoe. Yelverton manager Colin Nolan came out of the task with many a cut in the ‘battle’ with nature. The club thanks the friendly Friends of Dartmoor group and to the Yelverton Golf Club volunteers. All their hard work will benefit the leat restoration project and yield health benefits for the golf club landscape and its members.
Golf Access continued this week with a junior nine hole short course competition. Golf Access rewards and encourages progress by a colour coded system for those new or returning to golf. It gives a stepping stone from practice and coaching to golf course application developing a player’s confidence and skills. A bright but chilly afternoon saw the juniors tackle the course with their usual enthusiasm and determination. Well done to all of them for making an enjoyable competition.
This week’s Yelverton Mid-Week Stableford was hit by challenging weather conditions but this did not stop eleven competitors battle for top spot.
Competition Standard Scratch was therefore affected by the returning scores and was set at 34pts. Results: 1, K Blaber 34pts; 2, AG Rice 32pts; 3, AP Stewart 31pts.
Thirty Yelverton vets braved the wintery conditions to play a three ball Stableford competition. The format was for three scores to count for the first six holes then two scores for the next six and finally one for the last six holes. Results: 1, Nick Ring, Philip Baker and Brain Medhurst 80pts; 2, Jack Bovingdon, Bob Carwithen and Neil Sellick 78pts; 3, Alan Malton, Keith Clench and Mike Ferris 71pts.
