IT WAS a busy day at Tavistock Golf Club as Devon’s club champions gathered for the DevonGolf Club Champion of Champions and Order of Merit Finals, with county honours and season-long bragging rights up for grabs!

Clubs from across Devon were invited to enter their men’s, women’s, boys’ and girls’ club champions to compete for the prestigious title of DevonGolf Club Champion of Champions. Most competitions were played off scratch, with some handicap sections also on offer.

The order of merit titles rewarded consistency throughout the season, with competitions held at clubs across the county. Only the seniors’ scratch order of merit had been settled before finals day, with Saunton’s Mark Snape having already secured the title beyond the reach of his rivals.

There was plenty to celebrate across the categories, with Churston’s Jack Dart taking both the men’s champion of champions title and the men’s scratch best score on finals day. Saunton’s Tommasina Miali enjoyed a particularly successful day, claiming both the girls’ scratch and handicap champion of champions titles.

Jenny Rhodes (Torquay) claimed the women’s club champion of champions crown ahead of Sophie Page whilst Stover youngster Callum Cogavin starred in the boys’ field.

Onto the order of merit and Dartmouth golfer Lee Marels led the way for the men, ahead of Torquay’s Will Farley.

Mark Snape, as previously mentioned, won the senior’s order of merit, edging out Tim Aggett in the scratch and levelling Simon Calvert with his handicap score.

Jack Dart had the best men’s scratch score on finals day and it was Craig Townsend (Exeter) for the seniors.

Congratulations to all the winners and runners-up for their achievements, and a big thank you to Tavistock Golf Club for being such excellent hosts and helping make it a successful day for DevonGolf.

This isn’t the end of the exploits from Stover’s youngsters as they, the south champions, battled against Staddon Heights (west) and Tiverton (east) for the prestigious Devon junior title. Sadly, north qualifiers Libbaton had to withdraw at the last minute.

The weather was far from ideal in the aftermath of hurricanes Austin and Boleo, but nothing could stop Tiverton’s talented youngsters from storming to victory in the Henry Truscott Trophy final at The Warren Golf Club.

The final was played in Stableford format, with the best five scores from each team of six counting towards the overall total.

With players drawn so that no one played alongside a teammate, the tension mounted as the scores came in. Teams could only wait and wonder who was still out on the course and whether a crucial score might swing the result in their favour. In a competition where one great round can make all the difference, there was plenty to keep everyone guessing.

Stover's junior captain Brook-Tyler Mitchelmore led from the front and upped his team's score with a hole-in-one on the fifth hole. Brook-Tyler is having a great year winning the Devon Boys' Championship at Honiton. Although in his last year as a DevonGolf junior, BT already plays for the men's team and has an unblemished record.

But Tiverton held their nerve and delivered the winning total of 163 points. Stover pushed them hard, finishing just six points behind on 157 and Staddon Heights recorded 137 points.

Charlie Berner, Jack Panter, Felix Neil, Harry Gonza, Alfie Panter and Xander Rickford were delighted to lift the Henry Truscott Trophy for Tiverton Golf Club. Their first win since 2017 — and a brilliant team achievement to celebrate.
