TAMAR and Tavy Gig Club held their annual award presentation night on Saturday at the Bere Alston Bowling Club.
Club rowing captain Carolyn Dawe and chairman Tricia Stewart awarded trophies to the following members: newcomer of the year was John McGrane; junior member of the year was shared by Rosie Lloyd and Amber Friendship; the mens' squad award went to Chris Dill; ladies squad, Jo Cameron; veterans squad, John Rogers.
The club award was presented to Brian Nobbs who built the clubs wooden gigs – Tamar and Ginette. Tricia told of Brian's continuing endeavours on the club's behalf, providing support at many regattas, often towing the gigs and representing the club at the Cornwall Pilot Gig Association meetings – all in spite of the fact that he never rows the boats!
Simon Howes won the Golden Thole Pin award. The chairman's award was shared by Kathy Fairchild who has returned to rowing and circuit training against all odds – and Sam Twine a young member who is now undergoing gruelling training regimes with an aim to be part of the Olympic rowing squad for Brazil 2016.
The chairman talked about how inspirational both these winners are with their tenacity and determination though for very different reasons.
