TAVISTOCK Athletics Club showed the fruits of its labour from its quality coaching, dedicated training particularly amongst its track and field athletes - as shown from two recent competitions featuring club members.
At Millfield School in Street, Somerset athletes competed in the South West League opening fixture on behalf of the Armada Athletics Network team. This collaboration of athletes from Plymouth and the surrounding area brings together young and older competitors to battle against clubs from as far afield as Dorset and North Somerset.
Tavistock athletes returned with a string of personal bests, a couple of club records and two league records along the way.
In the U13s, Jude White battled gamely in his 100m, 1500m and long jump. Freddie Williams put in excellent performances in the 100m and 200m achieving PBs in both. Harry Herdman not only achieved personal bests but won both the 100m and 200m events. To top that he took the baton in the fourth leg of 4 x 100m relay and stormed from third to the front to finish off what was a marvellous day for the young developing athlete. His twin sister Francesca excelled in her debut 70m hurdles to come a creditable seventh position overall.
Jodie Stacey tackled the 200m and 300m in the U13s category and showed growing confidence over those distances.
U15s boy Patrick Channings had a cracking 23.64s in the 200m and 37.37s in the 300m - winning both and posting a new club and South West League Divisional records.
Also amongst the PBs was U17 Dean Smith who came third in the 400m and 1500m and second in the javelin. Dean has blossomed into a superb athlete under the coaching of Adam Tofield.
Adam Tofield himself posted PBs in his 400m and 1500m winning both events in style. Allan Herdman, also competing in the senior category put in decent performances in the 400m and long jump.
Just two days later club athletes were at it again in Exeter at the monthly Exeter Harriers Open meeting which also incorporated the British Milers Club 800m/1500m graded races.
U11 Jenny Milburn continued her fine form with another victory, PB and club record in the 600m as well as a winning 75m and a second in long jump.
Harry Herdman won his 100m and Francesca Herdman was fifth 100m and PB'd in the 70m hurdles in fourth.
Patrick Channings ran in the U17s' 100m and 200m events and came in third and second respectively. U15 girl Lily Mills competed in the three throwing events on offer and won the shot and discus with a second in the javelin .
Perhaps the star performances came from Dean Smith and Adam Tofield who both ran in the same 800m race. They both stormed to personal bests and, notably, new club records. Adam broke the U17 mark with a fine 2m 04.66s result and Adam posted an excellent 2m 01.99s time.
Under 17 Harrison Baker ran a good 1500m with veteran Tony Symons also coming away happy after a fine run over the same distance.
