THE Weir Quay based Tamar and Tavy Gig Club ladies squad were in action at the annual County Gig Championships over the weekend – the final blue ribbon event of the racing season.
Having prepared hard by improving fitness and technique, the racing was eagerly anticipated. As well as unfamiliar gigs to row and quick change overs, a much longer course and a stiff offshore breeze presented some quite challenging conditions.
The Tamar and Tavy A crew in Dall Lewyer got through to the second round with a competitive time, and found themselves up against top class crews belonging to Caradon, Falmouth and Charleston.
The indomitable Jo Cameron coxed the T and T ladies throughout.
In the second round in 'Verbena' the ladies had a great start and they were well placed coming to the first buoy.
Unfortunately, a costly clashing of oars with Pinnacle, impacted on their time and the 'A' crew were disappointed not to go any further in the competition.
The B crew also coxed by Jo Cameron, had a tough draw and despite giving absolutely everything, came fifth in their heat.
Overall, the Tamar and Tavy 'A' crew came 33rd out of 90 crews who entered these championships – an improvement of eight places.
Not a bad weekend's work by the ladies. As the cox said 'it was worth all the pain!'
