THERE are not to many footballers who can claim to have played in a 'World Cup' but a young Tavistock College pupil is about to achieve her goal. Darcey Hepworth has been selected to play in the Youth football World Cup in Gothenburg, Sweden next week. The talented footballer, although only aged 14, will be representing Plymouth Argyle U17s level. Her love of football began when she started playing mini soccer at the age of four at sessions organised by Tavistock's local community football coach Mark Wickett. Mark, who has been a role model for his star pupil, said she deserves her call up to the international tournament. 'Darcey has a natural talent for the game; she is strong both on and off the ball and has always been able to read the game and holding her own with her fellow team mates. She would always turn up in all weathers – rain, snow or shine. Darcey continued to play in a mixed team – Tavistock Community Football until the age of 12 — her team mates showed her equal respect even though she was the only girl in the squad.' Darcey was selected to play for Devon Girls Centre of Excellence during the season 2012/13 and captained the squad the following season. Her ability saw her travel across the country playing teams from the likes of Chelsea, Bristol, Portsmouth and Norwich. Her talents were noted by England and she has spent time at one of the England Performance Camps, a training resource for the England squad. Darcy told the Times: 'The EPC was a fantastic experience – I'm very happy that I've been selected to play in the Gothia Cup for Plymouth Argyle. This is a great opportunity for me not just to experience a worldwide international tournament but for me to meet new people and look at how other people perceive the game – it will also develop my understanding and passion for the sport.' Shaun Hulbert, her PE teacher at Tavistock College, is full of praise for her efforts on and off the field: 'Darcey has been a fantastic PE role model for younger students at Tavistock College. 'She has not only raised the profile for girls' football which has seen more girls participating at the college, she has also used her exceptional skill level and passion for sport to achieve to high standards in PE lessons. Darcey has benefited from the mentoring programme for talented and elite sportspersons at Tavistock College by the PE faculty, where she also a 'gold ambassador on its sports programme.'
