SUNDAY was definitely a good day for Callington Town FC as two of their teams won their respective league titles with important victories.

In the morning, Callington Veterans went down to Grampound in the Q Cornwall League division one knowing that only a win by six clear goals would be enough to overhaul Lanreath, and they went two better with an 8-0 victory.

Pete Jonas, Lee Beer and Simon Palmer all hit braces while Steve Cribb and Gary Plumb added the others to guide them to victory.

Then three hours later, Calliington Ladies arrived at Tavistock 3G to take on Plympton Ladies knowing that a victory would give them the South West Women’s Football League Western division title to add to the Cornwall FA Cup they secured in April.

Plympton were no pushovers and twice took the lead but goals from Amy Hemingway, Lucy Bounsall and what turned out to the be the winner from Gemma Farley. Her strike secured the three points meaning Plymouth Argyle could not catch them and the team were left celebrating with their supporters at the final whistle.

LAMERTON Community FC had to earn six points from their last five games to secure the Duchy division three league title.

They first travelled to second place St Stephens with the hosts bringing in some first team players. However Lamerton prevailed as winners, with Nathan Panter and Jack Payne scoring a bullet header to win 2-1.

Lamerton’s second test was another tricky away game to St Dennis where the hosts made the visitors work hard on a hot day; against the run of play, Sam Hicks struck first to take the lead, then the hosts levelled with a fine goal. Lamerton with their never say die attitude pulled in front with Nathan Panter but for only the hosts to level the game to finish all square.

With games going their way with teams below them losing, Lamerton were crowned champions, but they still had to play their three remaining games. The first was away to Rame Peninsula, where they lost 2-5, with Nathan Panter scoring a brace.

Against St Eval Spitfires, and knowing they were to be crowned champions after the game the visitors played some great football and took control. A superb free kick from Graham Galway which went in the top corner, and goals from captain Paul Cowling, a penalty from Nathan Panter, a tap in from Blair Vanstone and a brace by Ryan Smale saw Lamerton win in style.

Phil Cowling, on behalf of the club said: ‘A massive thank you to all the support from our sponsors and fans that travelled to see us lift the trophy. It’s been a memorable season.’
