Trevor’s Son-Rise Boys 3

IT may have played a charity game at Langsford Park the home of Tavistock AFC on Saturday but there was no holding the two teams playing to raise funds for the Son-Rise Specials Trust.

Friendly rivalry was a little more intense as the sides were captained by brothers - Lee for the Tavistock Hire Centre and Mark for Trevor’s Son-Rise Boys.

Tavistock Hire Centre started as firm favourites and for the first 25 minutes had the Son-Rise boys on the rack. However, the game changer was when substitute Ross Still came on and, against the run of the play, scored the opener for Son-Rise which divided the teams at half-time.

The game went from end to end with both teams giving no quarter and cheered on by a healthy crowd boosted by the the support of the Tavistock Specials.

In the second half a screamer from 30 yards by Steve Gibbons made it 2-0 and a third by Sam Hicks sealed the victory for the underdogs.

The charity game was dedicated to Trevor Walker, who was due to referee the game but unfortunately died six weeks before.

After the game Tavistock Son Rise committee member Robin Rich and trustee Sally Perkins made the presentations after the game. With a generous donations by the West Devon Referees’ Association of £480, in total £836 was collected for the trust.

The referee was Lee Johnson with assistants Brian Johnstone, Steven Mason and Richard Mason.

The Son-Rise committee thank the Times for sponsoring the event and all those who took part and supported the event.
