Carlsberg South West Peninsula League Division one East
Okehampton Argyle 3
Brixham 4
OKEHAMPTON again showed tremendous character but after an excellent second half performance they just failed to get a point from visitors Brixham.
With Harry Geering unavailable, outfield player James Williams donned the gloves and put in a man of the match performance with a string of fine saves. Brixham for their part played some of the best football seen at Simmons Park this season and this was an entertaining game to watch for the spectators.
Brixham took the lead with the quickest goal seen at Simmons Park this year when from the kick-off, the ball was played back to centre half Alex Smith who launched the ball forward for Graham Mercieca to head over James Williams before side-footing home into an empty net. Back came Argyle and only eight minutes later, a good move down the right saw captain Alex Wren fire home a fierce shot from the edge of the box to make things all square. As the game swung from end to end the clever and skillful Brixham forwards always looked dangerous and on 21 minutes, a perfect cross was delivered into the Oke box for Alex Smith to finish. Seven minutes later, Scott Robinson scored a third for Brixham to send them in with a two goal interval lead.
Argyle came back after the break and pushed the visitors, playing some fine football but were caught by a fast break on 65 minutes when Robinson ran half the length of the pitch before crossing for Mercieca to make it 4-1.
Oke now showed tremendous resilience and came back again with Steve Kinsey reducing the arrears with a fine shot from inside the box three minutes later. With ten minutes remaining, Argyle produced their best move of the match culminating in Kinsey firing home his second of the match, but despite all of Argyle’s efforts they just could not pull an equaliser out of the hat in the remaining minutes.
