TAVISTOCK Squash Club’s second team made it through to the final of the Plymouth Company Squash Leagues plate competition held at Fort Stamford on May 25.

The team made it through three rounds of matches that included a win over Devonshire two in the semi final.

With Nigel Eadie absent for the final Neil Martin stepped up to play, joining Ian Smart, Phil Honey, Richard Baxter and Simon Powell to take on NewZapp. NewZapp are a strong side and it was always going to be a tough match for the Tavistock side.

Neil battled hard and despite going 2-1 up ran out of steam going on to lose 2-3. Simon got off to a bad start but rallied in the second game pushing his opponent all the way, however, in the end went down 0-3. Richard never gave up and took his opponent all the way just losing out 2-3. Phil battled away in his match against a good player, but ended up losing 0-3. Ian had a titanic battle at number one against a player who had beaten him twice in the leagues already. He started slowly but gradually found his game and put his opponent under increasing pressure to come through with a 3-2 win, much to the delight of the rest of the team.

Tavistock Squash and Racketball Club’s monthly competition in May was the quarterly handicapped tournament.

Will Westlake and Ian Smart were back again to battle it out for the honours and with a good turnout to take them on and handicaps based on the squash levels system, everyone had to work hard to make it through. This produced lots of good close games with the stronger players not being able to take any chances.

The main final was between Ian Smart and Phil Punter and the plate final between Will Westlake and Oly Boyce. Ian had been playing great squash all evening and despite the handicaps he convincingly won all his matches, including the final, despite the best efforts of his opponents.

In the plate Oly gave Will a good match, but in the end Will’s extra experience paid off to take the win – his third win in row in the plate.
