Tavistock AFC 10

Newquay 0

TAVISTOCK moved up to second place in the league with this convincing win over bottom club Newquay and boosting their goal difference tally.

Captain Lewis Daw returned to the starting line up, but his brother Warren had not recovered sufficiently from a knock, so he took a place on the bench. Shane Krac was back after suspension, but both Steve Rogers and Tiegan Rosenquest were not available and Josh Robins was serving a one match suspension.

It took the Lambs just five minutes to open the scoring, when a Ricki Shepherd shot was blocked the ball fell to Ben Cross who fired the ball low into the corner of the net from 18 yards. The Lambs continued to dominate possession and doubled their lead in the 16th minute when Josh Grant scored a terrific goal, following a great move he got the ball in the penalty area to pivot and unleash an unstoppable shot on the turn into the top corner.

The Lambs were awarded a penalty in the 24th minute when a defender handled in the area, Glynn Hobbs saw his ferocious spot kick cannon back off the angle of upright and crossbar and role to safety. Krac, who was controlling the middle of the park, played a delightful one two with Hobbs, to open up the visitors’ defence and fire home from 12 yards. Both Jack Crago and  Shepherd went close to increasing the lead before Gynn Hobbs unleashed a 25 yard thunderbolt to make it four. The Lambs following another terrific passing move had the ball in the net, but Josh Grant’s great header was ruled out for off side.

The second half was a repeat of the first with the Lambs in complete control and Newquay struggling to keep them at bay. Three minutes into the half,  a good move saw Shepherd find Grant with a great pass; Grant made no mistake and found the net from 15 yards. Six minutes later it was six, Crago was the provider for Hobbs to rifle home.

Newquay continued to try and get on the attack, a Scott shot was easily saved by Josh Oak. He then made saves to deny Old and Scott from reducing the arrears. Krac then got his second when his powerful header from a Dave Hallett corner kick nestled in the net.

In the 74th minute another fine move split the visitors’ defence wide open and Hobbs  made no mistake to make it eight to complete his hat trick. Crane in the visitors’ goal then made a tremendous save, turning the ball away for corner kick to deny Grant from getting his hat-trick. From the corner kick the ball was cleared off the goal line by Burt. Tavistock added two late goals when the visitors defence was tormented by Hobbs as two fine moves splitting the defence saw him take the ball around the keeper before calmly slotting the ball home, to make his personal tally five for the game. Credit must be given to this plucky Newquay side who throughout the game tried to play some good football, and not result to tough man tactics.

This was another fine performance by the Lambs with some good individual performances, but man of the match was Shane Krac showed his class and completely ran the show in the middle of the park, plus scoring two goals.

Torpoint Athletic 2

Tavistock AFC 2

THE Lambs had to make changes in this midweek game as Dave Hallett had not recovered from injury, and Lewis Daw was only fit enough to make the subs bench.

It was Torpoint that made the early running and Oak was made to make a great save pushing the ball away for a corner kick. Tavistock then got their passing game going as a fine move saw Steve Rogers find Luke Brown; his pass found Hobbs, but his pass was inches out of the reach of Crago. Crago then went on another penetrating run that saw him brought down in the penalty area. Hobbs thundered home the spot to give the Lambs the lead in the 14th minute. Minutes later a great ball from Steve Rogers saw Crago’s header go inches over the bar. From a free kick Torpoint’s Thrornton header was well saved by Oak.

Play remained even with both teams creating half chances, as the Lambs struggled to get their free flowing game going as Torpoint gave them no time on the ball closing them down high up the pitch. The Lambs went into the interval leading by the only goal.

Torpoint equalised in the 52nd minute when a shot from Tattersall took a wicked deflection off Warren Daw — the ball looped over the well positioned Josh Oak, and dropped just under the cross bar into the goal. Three minutes later Crago flashed a shot inches over the bar.

Torpoint took the lead in the 65th minute when Rogers lost possession in midfield, a fine pass saw Tattersall in on goal he flashed the ball pass Oak. Tavistock responded well, and nearly equalised when Hobbs shot wide of the target ten minutes later.

Things got worse for the Lambs when Hobbs fouled the home keeper and was shown  a red card. This stirred the Lambs into action, the ten men they pushed forward to put the home defence under considerable pressure in the last ten minutes.

Manager Stuart Henderson immediately brought on Lewis Daw and pushed the big centre back up front, this had a great effect, as his aerial power caused the home defence real problems.

The Lambs deserved their equaliser which was a well worked goal. A good move saw Luke Brown fouled on the edge of the penalty area, man of the match Robins found the far corner of the net with a fine drive. The Lambs almost scored in time added on, but had to be content with a draw. This was a disappointing result for the Lambs, as they could have gone top of the table had they secured a victory.
