Lamerton CFC 6

LAMERTON’S second game in the league was against an inform Polperro side who are unbeaten in five games.

The visitors took the game to Polperro and it was not long until Nathan Panter found the net from a Scott Dent flick on; spurred on by the early goal Ben Backway took on three players on a mazy run before smashing the ball in the top corner to give the goalkeeper no chance. Soon it was three when Panter pounced on a ball from Backway to fire home.

Polperro pushed forward in the second half with their long ball tactics were swallowed up from the Lamerton back four of Jack Payne, Mark Piper, Glen Holmes and Dan Bailey. This pumped up the midfielders in Tom Scott, Dave Downham, Backway and the Jimmy Cole to go for Polperro’s jugular, and soon Panter banged in a second half hat-trick from assists by Backway, Bailey and Tim Westcott. Captain Josh Mcdonald was class all match and superbly saved some shots to keep a clean sheet.

Manager Simon Whithead was delighted in taking all three points off the top of the league side.

Woodford 6

LAMERTON got off to a flyer when great link up play from Tom Scott, Scott Dent, Paul Cowling and Sam Turner led to Cowling volleying home.

Soon after the pair linked up again but with Luke Shalgosky setting up Cowling on the wing to cross to Turner, who smashed the ball in the back of the net. Soon after Ben Backway threaded a ball through for Turner to chip the out coming goalkeeper; then it was becoming the Turner show when he placed a shot in the roof of the net to grab his hat-trick. Lamerton’s Glen homes, captain Peter Gibson and Shalgosky kept working hard and Dan Rogers, Dan Bailey never stopped running to stop Woodford from scoring but just before the break they pulled one back.

In the second half it was like a different Woodford team, they slowly created some lovely chances and soon scored two more goals to make it 4-3.

Woodford equalised with the last kick of the game. Two late goals in extra time for Woodford to march on to the second round.
