Tavistock AFC 4

Callington Town 2

TAVISTOCK came out on top in this local derby last Tuesday night, in a closely contested game. Dan Evans had not recovered sufficiently from injury to be included in the starting line up. Warren Daw moved into the back line.

The Lambs were fast out of the blocks and opened the scoring in the eigth minute when fierce shot from Luke Brown was parried by the visitors keeper Borthwick the ball fell to Glynn Hobbs 22 yards from goal and his thunderbolt of a shot nestled in the corner of the net.

The visitors first real attempt on goal came in the 18th minute, when a fine shot from Finneran was tipped over the bar by Josh Oak. Seven minutes later the Lambs doubled their lead when a fine defence splitting pass by Steve Rogers saw Glynn in on goal he calmly rounded the keeper and slotted the ball home from ten yards. The Lambs were now dominating the game and should have increased their lead, but Borthwick pulled off two great saves to deny Luke Brown and Hobbs from scoring.

Five minutes before the interval Hobbs completed his hat-trick as Rogers played a perfectly weighted pass found him in space, firing home from 20 yards. Callington reduced the deficit two minutes before the interval, when Oak turned a shot from Sargent around the post for a corner kick. From the kick Thackery rose high to head home from six yards.

The second half saw the Lambs continuing to have the lions’ share of possession, with Borthwick being called into action to deny Rogers. Callington were awarded a free kick in the 56th minute but Kuevi shot over the bar from 20 yards.

On the hour Jack Crago replaced Brown. Ben Cross then combined well with Glynn who was denied by a brilliant save by Borthwick. Three minutes later the same two players combine well but it was that played the pass for Cross to ram the ball home in the corner of the net from 17 yards.

Lewis Daw then picked up an injury, and was replaced by Owen Jones. Borthwick then pulled off two more saves to deny Ricki Shepherd and Rogers.

Josh Oak was then made a great save pushing Rooke’s fierce shot around the post for a corner kick. From the well taken kick Rooke powered home a header from eight yards to make the score 4-2.

In the dying minutes Tavistock’s Jack Crago was brought down 22 yards from goal but Hobbs shot was well wide of the target.

This was another good team performance from the Lambs, although not at their best, they recorded a deserved victory over a hard working Callington outfit. There were several good performances but man of the match went to Glynn Hobbs who recorded another hat-trick.
