Devon and Exeter Three
St Martin’s 0
Chagford 4
CHAGFORD secured second place and promotion thanks to second half goals from Miller, Phillips, Friend and Sampson.
Both sides battled through a closely contested first half, with St. Martin’s more than a match for their high flying opponents, creating just as many chances.
Chagford looked nervous despite securing third in their penultimate game against Axmouth United; when they did break throug the St Martin’s defence, they seemed to have lost their goal-scoring touch. George Richards, in the home goal, grew in confidence as time passed and this filtered through to his teammates. At the other end, Norman dealt with St Martins’s probes equally well.
Early pressure in the second half led to a 58th minute corner that an unmarked Robbie Miller rose to meet and head home. Within minutes Jack Phillips, returning to his old haunt, fired in an unstoppable drive to double the advantage.
When substitute Davon Friend netted from close range, the contest was effectively over.
With time running out Reuben Sampson, who had had a torrid evening, was rewarded for his persistence and tucked away the fourth.
