MOUNT Kelly’s first XI hockey team completed a successful term with two wins, in the space of just three hours on the final Saturday of their season, over West Buckland School and the Old Mount Kelleians former pupils’ team.
In the first match West Buckland started strongly and it took fine defensive play and great goalkeeping from Emlyn Oxenham to keep the opposition at bay and the score was 0-0 at half time.
In the second half Mount Kelly’s midfield of Jacob Staig and Ben Dunlop began to control the game creating several opportunities for the forwards. Ben Grove scored twice — the first from a drag flick at a well drilled short corner routine, and Toby Stanyer added a third to give Mount Kelly a 3-0 win.
In the second game the former pupils team, comprising several university and club players, provided strong opposition but the school took a crucial lead at the end of the first half with a powerful reverse stick shot from Tom Rogers.
The old boys responded early in the second half to level the score but another short corner routine enabled Leon Horn to score a second for the younger side and a late volley from Tom Rogers gave the school a well deserved 3-1 victory.
