Heather Fell, Olympic modern pentathlete silver medalist, writes about her life 'on and off' the track.
I HAD a fleeting visit back to the UK including a day a trip to London with the usual packing and unpacking of pentathlon kit. The whole forty-eight hours were wet enough to leave me looking forward to my next trip; especially after my run along the canal toe path in Bath left me completely covered in mud - something which I might expect in the winter months, not in July. This memory already seems very distant as I sit writing this in the sweltering city of Sofia.
I am in Bulgaria for the senior Europeans, my final competition of the season. Having spent nearly a week here I am impressed by the competition organisation including food and accomm-odation but most importantly the city seems to have ample wi-fi spots. This might sound a little unnecessary but with no English television available it has been essential in order to follow the second week of Wimbledon.
It's been slightly strange hearing the interruptions due to rain while we have had our competition delayed to avoid riding and running in the extreme heat of the midday sun. However there have been no complaints on our rest days, especially over the weekend when we discovered an outdoor swimming pool to do some light training - well actually it was just a relaxing way to cool off between sunbathing!
I do seem to have mentioned a lot of sport recently but it is my passion and this time of year you cannot escape it. It has been a week of highs and low for British sportsmen. Andy Murray getting so close to the elusive Wimbledon final, Mark Cavendish surviving a nasty crash on the Tour De France and several track and field athletes narrowly missing out on the Olympics after some controversial selections. I am sure we have a lot more to look forward to this summer.
