TAVISTOCK RFC hosted a superb county U12 event with cup, plate and shield won by Topsham, Kingsbridge and Totnes respectively.

On a lovely April Sunday teams involving 300 children took part in a well marshalled event that benefitted hugely from the weather window that appeared to open for the day.

For Tavistock U12s it was the culmination of a long and improving season that had seen the team developing its core skills and begin to produce a style of rugby to excite.

An early win in the pool stages against South Molton with  opportunist tries fron Jasper Cameron and Alastair Spicer was based around some harrying defence work, notably by Jack Morris.  Max Pamplin orchestrated the release of quick possession, which in turn opened up numerous attacking opportunities for Ben Roberts to mesmerise the opposition with a series of easy, swerving breaks.

Robust defence led by the bristling Al Spicer allowed Tavistock's forwards, with Morgan Scott and Bailey Coombes to the fore, to repeatedly rip possession from their much larger counterparts and unlock South Molton's fragile defences.

Holding a one try lead going into the final minute, a crucial final play tackle from Max Pamplin turned over possession and allowed Al Spicer in for a game sealing score.

In the next game Tavistock were pitted against a physically challenging Barnstaple side and put in a great effort despite a try rout for the Barnstaple side.

In the first of the plate pool matches, Tavistock matched a talented Kingsbridge side with tenacity and endeavour, only ceding defeat following a defensive seizure.

The home side finished off their pool matches with a comfortable win over Tiverton thanks once again to tries from Al Spicer and Ben Roberts.

The team thank the coaches, committee and parents who helped make the day such a success.
