Throgmorton League Cup

Liskeard Athletic 2

Tavistock AFC 5

THE Lambs progress into the quarter finals of the cup, after overcoming a two goal deficit to record a convincing win in the end. Dan Hart reverted to the right back position with Jarryd Kelly taking over his position in midfield. Paul Quinn returned at left back after recovering from injury, which has kept him out for thee weeks.

The Lambs were not at the races for the opening 30 minutes as they failed to get any fluency in their game, giving the ball away to their opponents on so many occasions through mis-placed passes.

Liskeard took advantage of this poor period of the game and they opened their account in the 20th minute, when good work on the left wing and a cross from Tom Hall, found Matt Hawes in the area and his fine shot from 12 yards nestled in he far corner of the net.

The home team doubled their lead three minutes later, after a corner kick the ball was cleared but fell to Lee Blatchford just outside the penalty area, his powerful, perfectly placed 20 yard drive gave Lambs' keeper Meeds no chance.

This stirred the visitors into action and they raised their game as suddenly the passes began to flow.

Joe Carey was unlucky in the 30th minute when his fine effort was tipped over the bar by the home keeper. The visitors continued to press the home defence and in the 38th minute they reduced the arrears. A Paul Quinn corner kick found Jarryd Kelly, who lost his marker and fired home from eight yards.

Two minutes later the Lambs equalised when a fine move between Carlton Farnham and the lively Ian Holmes split the home defence — the reverse pass from Holmes found Farnham on the angle of the penalty area and he placed his shot perfectly in the top corner of the net.

The Lambs were now the dominant force and had a couple of chance to have taken the lead before the interval when Ian Holmes and Ian Rooke both went close, but the scores remained level at half time.

It took just three minutes of the second half for the Lambs to take the lead when the impressive Ian Holmes was on hand to fire home, after a shot from Farnham had been blocked. Three minute later the Lambs increased their lead when Ian Rooke was pulled down in the penalty area. Johnny Morris made no mistake and fired home the spot kick.

The Lambs continued to press and had the home defence under severe pressure for long periods and could have increased their lead with Johnny Wyatt, Dave Hallett, and Farnham all just missing the target. The visitors increased their lead in the 78th minute when Ian Holmes, who caused the home defence problems with his movement, rammed the ball home from an acute angle to complete the scoring, and put the Lambs through to the next round.

Tavistock will no doubt reflect on not giving a team a two goal start before it stirs them into action. After the half hour it was a good team performance with the players showing their ability and skill.

Ian Holmes showed his class, his movement up front was superb, with Carlton Farnham, and Joe Carey always causing problems on the wings. Dave Hallet and Jarryd Kelly were dominant in the middle of the park and the defence after the opening half an hour really looked good.
