FOLLOWING on from Saturday's cricket washout, the sun gods shone on Langton Park on Sunday for the much anticipated annual Yeleverton Cricket Club's President's Day fixture.

The sterling efforts of 'apprentice groundsman' Chris Cottrell and some volunteers ensured the ground was playable.

Club president Brian Chetwynd's XI formed from a mixture of past and present Yelverton players and captained by club chairman Geoff Willcocks, took on a Club XI captained by current first team skipper Rich West.

After the toss it was decided that the Club XI would have first use of the wicket.

Tom Watkins and Chris Oliver made a steady start, before Oliver was bowled behind his legs by Ben Spear.

Steve Luffman joined Watkins and after hitting a couple of boundaries was caught by Joel Avery in the covers off the bowling of Dave Ackford.

Watkins was one away from his half century when he was caught by Avery, this time off the bowling of Rob Guy.  Two balls later Guy removed skipper West for a duck, also bowled.

An undefeated 70 from Dave Scott ably supported by some middle and lower order hitting from Rob Grove and Iain Cunningham got the Club XI score up to 230 before the final wicket fell, Kevin Treweeks snared five victims for the President's XI.

A chase of 230 off 37 overs always looked a difficult proposition and so it proved as the President's XI managed 140-9 when the light and overs ran out.

Dan Vince, Dave Ackford and Rob Guy made the main contributions to the Presidents XI score.

The bowling honours were shared with West and Oliver taking a couple of wickets each for the Club XI.

It was a good day had by all.  Organisers said a special thanks to all the former players who made the trip to West Devon, the furthest traveller was Tim Fawbert who came over from Germany.
