Devon D

Countess Wear v Yelverton

YELVERTON remain 11 points clear at the top of the D Division despite slumping to defeat at fellow promotion chasers Countess Wear.

The visitors were bowled out for just 84 and returned from Exeter with one point and an eight-wicket defeat.

Chris Vinson top-scored with 30 not out, while new signing Paul Shaw snapped up a wicket and the ever reliable Iain Cunningham 1-11, but these were the only successes on a disappointing day.

Fortunately for Yelverton, the weather ruined their other promotion rivals' chances of cutting into their table-topping advantage.

Skipper Rich West admitted his side, particularly the batters, had failed to deliver, but reckons they will be eager to make amends next  weekend.

He said: 'We just didn't get going and only scoring 80 odd meant our bowlers didn't have a reasonable target to defend. Losing the toss was key, and being put into bat first on a damp pitch and wet outfield, meant we were struggling from the start.

'It's unusual for all our top order to fail on the same day and we're keen that won't happen again. Every one of them came off very upset with themselves and resolving to put it right next time. That's a very pleasing attitude for a captain to see in his team, as they didn't blame the conditions, which they could have done, but themselves.'

n This week Yelverton are once again on their travels to East Devon to take on Halberton & Sampford Peverell.

Devon Seconds C

Yelverton seconds v Clyst Hydon

YELVERTON seconds managed to get in half a game at Langton Park before the rain arrived on Saturday.

After winning the toss, skipper Chris Pearson had no hesitation in asking Clyst Hydon to bat.

With conditions becoming more difficult underfoot and with the ball becoming more slippery as the afternoon progressed, bowling and fielding became more of a lottery and Clyst Hydon took advantage as they raced to 206-4 off 33.1 overs before the rain forced the players from the middle.

Terry Roe 1-17 off six overs and Chris Pearson 2-27 off six took three of the four wickets to fall.  Russell Corney (29), Richard Martin (40) and Chris Holmes 63 no made the major contributions for the visitors.

n This week Yelverton seconds take on table toppers Cornwood thirds at Langton Park, 2pm.
