THE weather was awful for the Isles of Scilly Wild West Gig racing championship but every Cotehele Quay Gig Club member showed their prowess despite the awful conditions.
CQGC is proud of their teams who, despite everything, improved on many final positions on last year's results.
Their ladies' superveterans team (over 50s) made a superb fifth place in the long race from St Agnes to St Mary's harbour; the team in Cream of Cornwall were coxed by Dave Ward with Karen Gallacher, Rita Hoile, Sara Rogers, Sarah French, June Taylor and Karen Ward.
The ladies' veterans in its new boat, Teylu, came 41st with the club's men's vets coming in 22nd and 39th.
The men's A and B team had a superb tussle and both ended up in the same heat in the final. The B team pipped the A team on the line coming 41st with the A team half a boat behind.
For some rowers it was their first Scillies experience and they coped superbly with the challenging conditions.
Final results were ladies' A team 69th; B 80th; C 92nd and D 127th; men's A team 42nd; B 41st; C 92nd and D 130th.
After a weekend of drama, incidents and events, and despite substantial swells, choppy water and the cold and wet it was a successful and satisfying competition. A total of 74 rowers and supporters from the club celebrated on the beach after the racing, an exceptional turnout.
