LAST weekend it was the Cotehele Quay Gig Club men's turn to take part in the annual Newquay Championships. They had a superb championship, entering three crews for the first time and coming away with the club's best ever results.  Once the fog lifted on Saturday, conditions for the first round were ideal and, although the Cotehele crews all had tough draws, everyone rowed really well. Ninety teams took part and Cotehele QGC men's A and B both came second in their heats and progressed to round two, while the men's C were unlucky to miss out on qualifying as a fastest loser by three seconds. Conditions were tougher in the afternoon when the men's A came fourth in their heat to qualify to the quarter finals, while the B crew made a fight of it but did not make it through. Conditions were good again on Sunday and the A crew put in a great row coming fifth in their quarter final race and finishing 18th overall —its highest finish to date. Cotehele men's B finished in 41st and the men's C in 49.   Club chairman David Egerton said: 'Three crews in the top 50 is amazing and, following on from a successful ladies' championship two weeks ago, it is a brilliant way to end the season.'
