PILOT gig crews descended on Newquay Harbour earlier this month to battle it out in the Newquay Men’s County Gig Championships.

The hugely competitive event attracted more than 80 men’s crews.

Cotehele Quay men’s A crew had a successful start in round one, taking second place in their heat and in round two crossed the finish line in a speedy 12 minutes, qualifying for the quarter-finals the next day.

Cotehele were up against some fierce competition in their heat, racing against some of the best crews and finished in 16th place overall – a great result for the club!

After months of tough speed endurance training on the River Tamar, three crews from Cotehele Gig Club took part in the annual Great River Race, the UK’s Traditional Boat Championship on Septemberm 8.

The 21.6 mile race up the River Thames, known as London’s River Marathon, was attended by more than 320 international crews.

The men’s crew crossed the finish line in an impressive 2 hours 32 minutes 59 seconds to claim third place in the Cornish Pilot Gig class and 17th overall out of 320 boats.

The ladies’ crew completed the race in 2.58.24, placing 29th out of 49 gigs. A few minutes behind them were the mixed crew who crossed the finish line in 3.04.13.

The crews had great fun taking part and were delighted to have raised money for Cancer Research UK and the REACH Project Autism South West through their rowing.
