ON a wet evening on March 22, an enthusiastic Okehampton U11's rugby squad arrived in Cornwall for their first tour experience and a great weekend was had by all.
There was training on the beach, swimming and a fiercely fought football match with the dads.
On Sunday morning they took on an unbeaten Perranporth side. The West Devon lads had the upperhand in the firsthalf, with strong scummaging, rucking, elusive running, which saw them ahead by a try. Perranporth came back in the second half, with their fly-half having a great game and scoring all their tries. The visitors' defence was second to none, with every player giving their all but it was the home team who crossed the line to win by one try.
The second game against Penryn saw the squad regroup and come out fighting, running in nine tries during a superb display of rugby by the whole team.
The players were presented with printed ORFC polo shirts and bobble hats thanks to a donation from the Okehampton and district Lions and some enthusiastic fundraising by the players. A presentation to Perranporth and Penryn Rugby Clubs followed the matches to round off an enjoyable weekend.
The U11s say a big thank you must go to all the parents of the squad, whose help and support made the whole experience a memorable one for all concerned.
