CONSERVATIVE A went in to this game against Golf A knowing that if they won three frames then the Tavistock Snooker League title would be theirs for an unprecedented fourth consecutive season.

Golf A were not going to give it to their opponents on a plate though as their main player Turnbull went head to head with Con A’s Carruthers. A 21 break from Turnbull would normally be enough but it was Carruthers that finished the stronger to take the frame.

Lacey made it two for the Con A after a battle with Golf A’s skipper Pope in the early stages, again, pulling away in the later stages to secure the frame.

Bell for Con A spurned several early chances to put some points on the board and was made to pay by some assured potting from Golf A’s Ruth who ran out a comfortable winner.

Con A’s Evans was looking well on the way to securing the three frames required only to have to repel a late potting spree from Wylie to take the frame and the league title for his team.

With the title in the bag it was ‘stand in’ Folley who took the fourth frame to put some gloss on the night for Con A. His dangerous opponent Whitley uncharacteristically let some early scoring opportunities go begging only for Folley to knock in a league career best 28 break from which Whitley never really recovered.

So Con A go into the last game with the title in the bag and Golf A can be pleased with a fourth place finish in their first ever league season. There is a lot more to come from Golf A next season.

By the narrowest of margins Conservative Z achieved their aim of third place in their final game of the season in a tight match against West Devon D.

Symons for the Con Z, who has had a somewhat inconsistent season, pulled out all the stops against Ward and played probably his finest game for some time against a difficult opponent who did his best to confound him but Symons’ cool head prevailed. McKechnie, unfortunately for the Con Z, could not maintain the momentum and fell to an on-form Murton who put a dent in the Con Z’s aspirations with a sterling display.

Things started to look decidedly grim for the Con Z when Decieco took another point from Flack who struggled to contain Decieco’s flair and potting skill. The high-flying Fitzsimmons for the Con Z took to the table next against the irrepressible Shrimpton and fought well to gain his team a vital point in another tight game.

At 2-2 it was all down to the last frame. Hooper for West Devon started strongly against Mayors but failed to keep pace with his opponent’s steady point scoring and sharp potting finally conceding to Mayor’s persistence. It was a tight match well fought and a satisfactory result for the Con’s.
