A SIMULATED Game Clay Shoot held at Sydenham Estate, Lewdown was a big success for charity. The fourth staging of a charity shoot by the estate and organised by Tavistock Clay Pigeon Club was blessed by fine weather. The day consisted of three man teams shooting 200 clays/'birds' over four stands. Each stand of 50 'birds' represented a different type of game — driven pheasant, driven partridge, decoyed duck and decoyed pigeon. In addition to the main team event there were two additional stands — a £50 Pool Shoot and a £50 'Digweed Challenge'. Twenty four traps were deployed in total. The highlight of the day for all was the pheasant drive from 'The Mound'. The action was fast and furious and the drive produced some good scores reflecting the popularity of game shooting, the highest being 46 ex 50 with an average of 31. The Partridge drive was on the edge of 'Blackdown' — a long wooded and steep bank. Some excellent game shooting style was witnessed as two teams managed an excellent 56 out of 60. Decoyed pigeon was shot whilst sitting on straw bales and caused much amusement. The day's events also included a £50 Pool Shoot and a £50 'Digweed Challenge' — a vertical teal shot from increasing distance. The winner was Richard Jewell with the pool shoot won by Dave Smith. The scoreboard saw Kelly's Heroes in third place on 156 out of 210, second was the Gun Room team from Ivybridge on 169 and the deserved winners the team of keepers from Maristow on 176. Donations were made of £800 each to RNLI, the Devon Air Ambulance Trust and The Chestnut Appeal for Prostate Cancer.
