THE Tamar Cavaliers cricket tour party arrived in Somerset in dry conditions. The team played its opening match against Morebath CC in a close game, which went down to the wire, with Morebath winning in the 38th over. D Snowden made 53 for the Cavaliers — the team supported him to make a total of 161. Morebath replied in a slow manner until S Kelland scored 73 to take the win, but not until S Sizmur and D Snowden bowled eight overs each, both taking three wickets. On the Tuesday the Cavaliers played Fitzhead. D Snowden weighed in with a well constructed 51, and S Sizmur, 46. However, the highlight was 74 from G Sizmur with support from M Pike 18 and N Hayden finished off with a knock of 34 not out. Fitzhead started off in a measured way and fought all the way, with a well constructed score of partners, finishing 63 runs short. The highlight of the Cavaliers' fielding was a hat-trick of catches for Tom Butt. R Mellor-Bond, M Rickard, Lee Cosgrave all took two wickets each. On Wednesday they played at Cuttcombe. The home team batted first, and scored a total of 180. Godfrey who scored 70 runs. The pick of the tourist bowling was T Scott (3 wickets) and N Mullins 4-19. The Cavaliers started in a slow manner, due to M Rickard and T Rogers going cheaply. Mullins and Scott (35 and 26 respectively) brought the chase back to the match but the Cavaliers fell well short — the wickets were shared equally amongst the Cuttcombe bowlers. The Cavaliers arrived in sunshine against Bridgetown and batted first. It was a slow start with Snowden and T Rogers going cheaply again, but T Scott 77 with M Pikes (17) helped bring the score up to 155. Bridgetown reached the total with ten overs to spare, due to a score of 73 from D Quick. Both a tour player and a home player fell in to the river trying to get balls back hit by after some lusty blows from the batsmen. The tour finished at Sampford Peverell against Halberton who batted first and set a reasonable score of 165 thanks to a half century from Joe Parkinson. Matt Rickard returning figures of 4-4. Cavaliers set about the score with Shaun Kendal and Gary Sizmur knocking 60 off eight overs. Cavaliers reached the home score with 18 overs to spare with G Sizmur 61 not out.
