MARCH is the time for the incoming Yelverton Golf Club ladies' captain to hold her 'drive-in'.
Angela Read, this year's captain, together with her husband Don, succeeded in making this a fun occasion. As usual, the ladies gathered at the starter's hut near the first tee to have refreshments in the form of a warming brandy and lovage and some savoury pastries.
Angela made her first drive of the year. All the ladies will have guessed where they think Angela's ball might land. They buy a sticker to be fixed on to a large poster of the layout of the first tee. The money collected goes to the charity Angela has chosen, which is Barnardo's.
The first drive was very entertaining as Tim McSherry (Yelverton's professional golfer) substituted a fun ball which exploded into streamers when Angela hit it. After the second drive with a real ball, Joan Voisin was the lucky lady to place her sticker near to where the ball landed.
The ladies then went out and played a fun competition. A better ball, played in threes with two scores to count on most holes.
Results of the drive-in: 1, Gilly Jarvis, Anne Ashley and Christine Longden on 59 points; 2, Linda Woods, Gina Mason and Kate Wright, 55pts.
