THE Kelly College U13s hockey team took part in the Devon Cup at Exeter Universities water based Astro Turf this week and came away with bronze medals.
A superb start to the tournament saw a 1-0 win over West Buckland in a tight game. The pace was quick and the boys battled well to keep their defence strong with Jacob Staig and Lachlan Fulton providing a solid backline. The forwards then capitalised on a breakaway goal just before the final whistle went.
A draw against Mount House in the next game 1-1 gave the boys the lift they needed to then go on and play hard against Exeter School who they also beat 1-0. The goals then started following for Jonathan Hawley and Freddie Williams against South Dartmoor B and Kings Ottery with wins of 6-0 and 5-0 respectively.
In the semi-final the U13s against South Dartmoor A the Kelly side had some of the better play. George Kharas was denied a goal and Ben Smith worked hard on the right hand side. At full time neither team had scored so the game went straight to penalty flicks. George Bowles did a superb job in goal but South Dartmoor went through to the final winning 3-2.
In the third and fourth playoff match against Mount House scored three times to win the bronze medal in a sporting tournament.
