TWO young competitors from Tavistock Drake Judo Club did superbly at the the Kent International held at the Medway Sports Centre in Gillingham.
The event attracted more than 1000 competitors from around the world. A spectacular multi level tournament.
Phoebe Frise, aged 10, won both her pool fights in convincing fashion, her first against a strong player who Phoebe held down with some great adaptation to keep the full osekomi on for 20 seconds. Her next contest was against a girl from Kingsley School which Phoebe scored two wazari throws to reach the full score of ippon She lost her semi-final but came home with a well deserved bronze and another international medal for Drake Judo Club.
Olivia Wilson, aged 12, weighed in at 58kgs but was put into the U63kgs,up against girls far heavier and older than her. In her first bout Olivia battled hard and scored a Wazari; she followed up with a solid hold for Ippon but in the semi-final lost against a larger and far older opponent to take a bronze.
