Devon E Bridestowe v Kilmington AFTER a disappointing loss last week at Whimple, Bridestowe were back at home this week to Kilmington, knowing that anything less than a win could all but end thier promotion hopes. The visitors won the toss and elected to bowl first. The Bridestowe openers started carefully facing Noble. At the other end, Wallis was dispatched in his first over by Sam Ewen off the back foot for six. In the next over Ewan looked to drive a full ball from Noble but it moved in and bowled him through the gate. Jopling joined Tom Fogerty who was looking comfortable; the pair ran well as Tom hit the ball well through the offside. Jopling was out caught bringing Jack Hatton to the crease and, along with Tom, knocked the ball around with ease. They put on 20 together before Fogerty fell to Seward, a ball keeping low and bowling him for 26. Phil Hatton joined son Jack, the latter whipping balls regularly through mid-wicket for boundaries. The pair respected good balls from Seward and Gooding but anything overpitched was punished by Jack. Phil struck Gooding for consecutive fours to take the score to 100-3 from 28 overs. Jack Hatton reached his 50 before Seward (9-28-2) finished an accurate spell and was replaced by Rockett, who removed Phil in his first over. In the next over James Ewen was also on his way back as he was bowled by a Gooding in-swinger. Dan Fogerty joined Jack with the game in the balance at 101-5. Jack Hatton continued confidently as he struck Gooding back over his head for six. Dan supported him well, running quickly between the wickets and also picked up a couple of boundaries, flicking the ball well behind square. His good work was undone when he was clean bowled by Gooding. With eight overs remaining, Butler took to the crease but Hatton was caught at long on off Rockett for an impressive 66. Lavis joined Butler and they saw out the end of Gooding's (9-51-2) spell but Butler was soon bowled by Wallis as was Pat the next ball. Bridestowe were eventually bowled out for 175, a decent score in the conditions. Tom and Dan Fogerty opened up the Bridestowe bowling and the big hitting Culley did get hold of a couple early on before Dan sent him on his way, caught at mid-on by Jack Hatton. Dan Fogerty picked up his second wicket in fine fashion to clean bowl Stonex. Lucas was his next victim as he trapped him dead in front lbw to reduce Kilmington to 26-3. He was bowling with real aggression and immediately troubled new man Gooding. Dan Fogerty (7-12-4) soon had his fourth wicket, his ball flicking the glove of Gooding and James pounced forward from gully to take an acrobatic diving catch. Jopling took over from Tom and picked up a wicket with his first bal as Cooke was caught by Lavis at square leg. Holland joined the talented Rockett at the crease and the pair began to build a partnership, they punished loose balls from both Jopling and Lavis before Jopling picked up his second wicket, removing Holland who was caught. G Cooke now joined Rockett with the score at 41-6. The pair took the score to 81-6 at drinks with Bridestowe still holding the upper hand. Lavis responded immediately after drinks by getting G Cooke out lbw. Rockett struck him for another six before another ball on the perfect length got a bit of lift and Rockett (42) could only push it up, and Lavis juggled the ball before claiming the catch to his joy. The very next ball Wallis was on his way back as Lavis bowled him all ends up. Noble and Seward survived Sam's over and the hat trick ball from Lavis before the game was over. Noble, who had put up some resistance, was bowled by Lavis (7.2-28-4) to finish a great four overs in which he took four wickets for just eight runs. Bridestowe had bowled out Kilmington for 100, thanks mainly to brilliant spells from Dan and Lavis.
