Devon D
Yelverton firsts v
Honiton
YELVERTON'S first XI got their 2012 Devon League campaign off to a perfect start, taking a maximum 20-point haul from their opening fixture against visitors Honiton.
Honiton skipper Kevin Kelly won the toss and asked Yelverton to bat first. Yelverton openers Dave Scott and Pat Hobbs got off to a steady start before Hobbs was caught behind for 9. Calum Reid joined Scott and immediately tucked into the Honiton bowling, hitting one enormous six which went over the pavilion on his way to a quickfire 31.
Scott fell lbw for 11 and Dan Cooper joined Reid at the wicket. Reid's swashbuckling innings ended with the score on 48 and Cooper was then joined by skipper Rich West. The fourth wicket pair of Cooper and West took the score up to 82 before Cooper fell for 7 to the bowling of Phil Tansley.
Next batsman Luke Windsor fell for a duck to leave Yelverton wobbling on 84-5 with half the overs gone.
Evergreen Geoff Brain joined West in the middle and the pair put on a innings turning partnership of 90 for the sixth wicket until Brain was bowled by Holmes for 26. West fell shortly after for a well played 55 with the score on 176-7.
Some lower order resistance from Kevin Treweeks (16 n/o), Terry Roe (11) and Iain Cunningham (11 n/o) got the Bohemians up to a above par score of 217-9 off their 46 overs. Honiton's most successful bowlers were R. Hill (3-15) and P Tansley (2-32).
Honiton's reply got off to a bad start with both openers departing before the score had reached double figures. Reid and Cunningham were the successful bowlers. Honiton's new batsmen at the wicket, Holmes (40) and Cave (54) threw caution to the wind and took the attack to the bowlers at every opportunity. The pair put on 88 for the third wicket, but both fell to the bowling of Brain along with R Ingram for a duck to leave the score on 113-5 at mid-innings.
The Bohemians continued to tighten the screw and apart from second XI skipper Andy Lapping's 39 not out there was little support from the lower order as West 13-1-37-3 and Brain 10-4-36-3 bowled out Honiton in the 39th over for 172 to win by 45 runs. Kevin Treweeks took the final wicket bowling the Honiton number 11 R Hill for a duck.
Maximum batting and bowling points on top of the 10 points for the win, gave the Bohemians a 20-point maximum.
