IT was a beautiful bright Sunday which favoured the racers at round three of the Woodland Riders winter series.

Held on another short, steep track nestled amongst the Tavistock Woodlands site near Chipshop.

The popular local race scene was boosted by riders travelling from further afield to swell the number of entrants — including ones from Wales and Surrey.

A new top section led through the trees towards the quarry area, then once over the fire road, it got steeper and wound down the hillside with drops, roots and rocks lining the way.

The 79 riders tested their nerve and skill to set a time against the clock for two race runs.

West Devon ride Jay Williamson in his first year out of juniors, just edged into first place in the expert category by the smallest margin. Master rider Jim Davage made a welcome return to local racing with a solid win.

Other category winners were Zak Hurrell in the seniors, Mathew Davies took the juniors and Andy Barron the veterans.

Special mention goes to 12 year old Keiran Atherton who won the freestyle jump competition. He did a one hand, no feet trick off the biggest jump on site.

Organiser Simon Hubbard thanked KOO Bikes, Silverfish and Super Saturated Clothing for their support and prizes.

The final round of the series will be held on April 22.
