Devon E Uplyme v Whitchurch Wayfarers WHITCHURCH travelled to distant Uplyme with some trepidation. Having lost the previous two games to teams below them in the league they were facing an in form team who had just beaten the league leaders. The return journey was one of considerable celebration as Whitchurch demonstrated the talent that lies within the team having just thrashed Uplyme. Batting first Whitchurch played with some circumspection taking 40 in the first 10 overs as Hodge (6) and Towl (37) assessed the situation against some accurate bowling. Hodge's departure to a good catch by Whittington brought Charlie Barriball (90) to the crease. He played his first 12 deliveries with a straight bat before launching himself at the bowlers. A glorious six and four consecutive fours announced his arrival. When Billy Barriball (93) joined his brother the real fireworks started. A stand of 181 for the third wicket set the tone for the rest of the day. Quick singles were intermingled with resounding boundaries (21 fours and nine sixes) leaving the home team unsure as to where to place the fielders. Both fell just short of deserved tons but the damage had been done. Davis (6 for 58) wrought some carnage in the lower order but the team were after runs and runs flowed. A final score of 334 with 54 extras left Uplyme surveying the wreckage over their tea. Kerswill with a niggardly 2 for 21 didn't make life any easier for the Uplyme batsmen. Wickets fell regularly. Buoyed up by the batsmen the fielding unit also put in one of the performances of the season. Sambells took three catches including one off his own bowling. Batey (30) provided some solid resistance but it was not until the seventh wicket that Uplyme started to fight back with a stand of 73 between Bellworthy (35) and Whittington (58) putting the Whitchurch fielders under pressure. With the asking rate approaching 10 an over at that time they had little choice. When they went it was only a matter of time for the tail to be mopped up with Nigel Barriball making a rare appearance as a bowler proving to be too much for the last man. n Whitchurch fixtures:- tomorrow (Friday) Ladies T20 are away Plymouth; on Saturday the firsts are home to Ashburton; the seconds are away to Torquay thirds; Sunday home Gordon Memorial game; Monday friendly Theale and Tilehurst; Wednesday home to Cornwall over 50s.
